Shmup 2 is done!


Hello again,

So this was the final week to wrap up shmup 2 and while I've put together something it feels like there's a lot that was unfinished or left on the cutting room floor. Unfortunately lasers didn't make it into the final game which was supposed to be one of the touchstone elements for this shmup so I guess I'll have to attempt them again in the future. On the other hand I did technically meet my other goals and I successfully made a 3d horizontal shmup with two levels. Some of the other things that didn't make it into the final build include enemy pathing. Technically it is used very briefly for the second level boss but I had more complex paths at one point that I lost after doing some refactoring and didn't have time to recreate. I also didn't manage to get all of the bullet patterns that I wanted in and the enemy layouts had only a very minimal amount of time put into them. I think I want to revisit this shmup in the future since I feel like there's tons more that I'd like to do with it and that it has potential to be a decent game with (a lot) more work. 

Now to go over what changed this past week.

I added the lives and continue widgets. These were pretty much pulled from my previous shmup but I did make a custom icon and change how the lives widget behaves. I made a bunch of changes to the player. I managed to fix a lot of the collision in the game and now the player can get hit by bullets. When they die it kills their options and stops them from firing. I also made tweaks to the player ship model textures and fixed the shot angles. I also added more support for different bullet pattern types and playing multiple patterns at the same time or in sequence. Unfortunately I spent more time on the code than on making patterns so while some of this is in the game it's under utilized. 

The remainder of my time was spent fixing the enemy layouts I broke as well as fixing up collision so that the player can't fly off screen. I also made sure scores and lives carry over between levels and finally I made a new song and primary shot sound for the player.

Anyways this game should be uploaded by the time I post this and with all that out of the way, on to the next one.
